LINE translation for expats in Japan 2026

A practical guide to surviving Japanese LINE group chats when your kanji reading is still a work in progress.

Flewnt

The Flewnt team. We live in group chats too.

Living in Japan as an expat means you are in group chats you cannot fully read. The parent group at your child's school sends daily updates in formal keigo. The neighbourhood association shares flood warnings and bin-day reminders. Your colleagues use LINE instead of email. The chat is in Japanese. You are not.

This is the gap Flewnt exists to fill.

What makes Japanese LINE groups different

Japanese LINE groups tend to operate at two registers: the formal administrative groups (school, building management, neighbourhood) and the informal social ones (colleagues after work, friend circles, hobby groups). The formal groups use polite but dense Japanese. The informal ones use abbreviations, emoji combinations, and regional slang that even intermediate learners struggle with.

Machine translation handles the formal register well. The informal register is harder, and no tool handles it perfectly. Flewnt uses GPT-4o mini with a group-context hint, which means it picks up on ongoing conversation threads and translates more naturally than a sentence-at-a-time approach.

How Flewnt works in a Japanese LINE group

  1. A group member adds Flewnt via the LINE add-friend link.
  2. You send /setup to set your target language (English, or any of the supported pairs).
  3. Flewnt observes messages. When a message arrives in Japanese and your target is English, Flewnt posts the translation immediately below the original, in the format: name馃挰translation.
  4. Other group members who have not added Flewnt see nothing different. The translation is invisible to them unless they also add the bot.

Your subscription is per-user. One payment covers you across every group you are in, forever, until you cancel.

The free tier

Try Flewnt on 50 lifetime translations. Enough to read real messages in your own groups and decide whether it fits. When you hit the cap, Flewnt pauses and prompts you to upgrade. No sudden silence in the middle of a meeting.

Plans start at $6 per month. Cancel any time, keeps working until the period ends.

What Flewnt does not do

Flewnt does not translate every message. It translates messages in a language that differs from your configured target. If your target is English and someone writes in English, Flewnt stays quiet. It is also not a replacement for learning Japanese. If anything, seeing the original alongside the translation is useful for language study.

Flewnt does not store message text. The translation request is processed and immediately discarded. Metadata (who sent what to which group, in which language) is retained for 48 hours for deduplication, then deleted. See the privacy policy for detail.

Getting started

  1. Add Flewnt on LINE using the button on the homepage.
  2. Once added, send /setup to configure your language pair.
  3. Add Flewnt to your groups: open the group, tap the three-dot menu, choose "Invite", find Flewnt.
  4. Send /on to activate in that group.

Japan-specific setup notes: LINE in Japan sometimes has regional account verification requirements. If you installed LINE with a Japanese phone number, the add-friend flow works without issue. If you are on an overseas LINE account, you may need to use the QR code flow. The how-it-works page covers both flows.

FAQ

Does Flewnt handle Kana and Kanji? Yes. Flewnt handles hiragana, katakana, and kanji. It also handles mixed-script messages (which are common in informal Japanese).

What about keigo (formal Japanese)? Flewnt handles keigo well. Formal register is easier for the underlying model than casual slang.

Can I translate into Japanese from English? Yes. The language pair is configurable per user. If you are a native Japanese speaker in a group with English-speaking colleagues, you can set your target to Japanese and Flewnt will translate English messages for you.

Does Flewnt work in group chats with many members? Yes. Flewnt works in any size LINE group. Only subscribers receive translations, so non-subscribing members see only the original messages.

Does LINE Have a Translator? 4 Limits

LINE has a built-in translator on Android, but not iPhone. It requires tapping each message, only translates one direction, and has no auto mode.
