LINE vs Discord vs Slack translation: expat guide

Which group chat platform has the best translation options for expats? A direct comparison of what actually exists and what actually works.

Flewnt

The Flewnt team. We live in group chats too.

Expats ask some version of this question regularly: why is LINE so hard to use in English? And the follow-up: would it not be easier to move everyone to Discord or Slack?

The short answer is that LINE is not going anywhere in Thailand, Japan, or Taiwan. The long answer is that the translation situation on each platform is meaningfully different, and understanding the differences helps you set realistic expectations.

LINE: high friction, high stakes

LINE is the dominant messaging platform in Thailand, Japan, and Taiwan. Market penetration is above 90% in all three. Your building management group is on LINE. Your child's school is on LINE. Your neighbourhood committee is on LINE. These are not groups you can ask to move.

Translation options in LINE, as of 2026:

Built-in LINE translation: LINE has a translate-message feature that requires you to long-press each individual message and select "Translate". It is per-message, manual, and does not run in the background. For a group generating 50 messages in the morning, this is not a practical workflow.

Copy-paste to a translation app: Works once. Does not scale. You will stop doing it.

Flewnt: Runs in the background. Translates every message automatically. Posts the translation in the group immediately below the original. Subscription is per-user, so one payment covers all your groups. This is the only currently available approach that does not require per-message manual action.

Discord: built-in AutoMod translation exists, with limits

Discord added a translation feature in 2023 for servers in the Community tier. The feature is server-wide and admin-configured. As a regular member, you cannot enable it unilaterally. It also requires the server to be in Community mode, which is not the default for social servers.

For expats whose communities organically live on Discord (gaming, some expat hobbyist groups), the built-in feature is useful. For groups that started on Discord by deliberate choice, the admin can enable translation. For the vast majority of Thai, Japanese, or Taiwanese community groups, Discord is not where they are.

Translation quality on Discord uses DeepL under the hood for some regions. Quality is good for European languages. Quality on Thai is weaker than Japanese or Chinese.

Verdict for expats: Discord translation is useful if your community is already on Discord and the server admin enables it. Not relevant to the LINE groups you cannot leave.

Slack: per-message translation via Slackbot

Slack has a translation workflow available in paid tiers. In Slack, you emoji-react to a message with a flag, and Slackbot translates it in a thread reply. This is manual, per-message, and requires the Slack admin to have enabled the workflow.

Slack is a workplace tool. Most expat social and community groups are not on Slack. If you are at a company that uses Slack and has multilingual channels, the flag-reaction workflow is a reasonable solution for occasional messages.

Verdict for expats: Good for multilingual workplaces already on Slack. Not relevant to social or community groups.

The honest conclusion

If you are an expat in Thailand, Japan, or Taiwan, the groups that matter to your daily life are almost certainly on LINE. Moving those groups to Discord or Slack is not realistic. The practical question is: how do you make LINE workable when your language skills are still developing?

Flewnt is the only currently available tool that does this automatically, without per-message action, and without needing to be the group admin.

The free tier is 50 translations. Start there before paying anything.

FAQ

Can I use Flewnt on Discord or Slack? No. Flewnt is a LINE Messaging API bot. It only works in LINE groups.

Is there a plan to support other platforms? Not in the current roadmap. LINE is the priority market.

What about WhatsApp? WhatsApp has a per-message translate option (long-press, translate). It is manual and per-message, similar to LINE's native feature. Expat communities in Thailand, Japan, and Taiwan tend to be on LINE rather than WhatsApp, but if your group is on WhatsApp, Flewnt cannot help there currently.
