Teaching in Thailand: translate PTA groups automatically
Foreign teachers in Thai schools deal with a specific problem: parent LINE groups, in Thai, every day. Here is how to stop missing the important ones.
Flewnt
The Flewnt team. We live in group chats too.
If you teach at a Thai school as a foreign teacher, you are probably in at least three LINE groups: the staff group, the parent committee group, and the group that seems to be for everything else. The staff group is manageable because colleagues will summarise for you. The parent group is harder. It moves fast, it is in Thai, and missing a message there has consequences.
This is a specific expat problem with a specific shape: you need to read, but you do not need to write. Flewnt is built for this case.
The problem with Thai LINE groups
Thai LINE group culture tends toward high message volume. Parents send voice notes, sticker-heavy confirmations, and forwarded announcements in quick succession. The important messages (event date changes, venue updates, fee reminders) arrive in the same stream as the social ones. Without translation, you are scanning for clues and asking colleagues to catch you up.
Translation apps require you to copy-paste each message manually. That works for one message. It does not work for a group generating thirty messages between 7am and 8am.
How Flewnt handles this
Flewnt runs passively in the background of LINE groups. You add it once, configure your target language, and it posts English translations immediately below each Thai message. You do not need to initiate anything per message. You do not need to remember to check a separate app.
The translation appears as a second message in the group chat, in the format name馃挰translation. Other group members, including the Thai parents, see the translation if they are also running Flewnt. If they are not, they see only their own messages, unchanged.
Setup for teachers
The fastest path:
- Add Flewnt on LINE: tap the button on the homepage or scan the QR code.
- Open your school's parent LINE group.
- Tap the group name at the top, choose "Invite members", find Flewnt.
- In the group, send
/on. - Flewnt confirms activation. Thai messages now translate to English in real time.
If you are in multiple groups (staff + parents + class-specific), repeat steps 2 to 4 for each group. Your single subscription covers all of them.
Thai-specific notes
Flewnt uses IBM Plex Sans Thai Looped for Thai script rendering in the interface. Translation quality on Central Thai is high. Regional dialects (Isaan, Lanna, Southern Thai) are harder for the underlying model. If your school is in a region with strong dialect use, expect occasional misses on informal messages.

The free tier
50 free translations to start, no card needed. A PTA group in active term generates roughly 150 to 200 translatable messages per month, so the free tier is enough to see it work on your actual group before the paid plan kicks in. Monthly plan is $6. That is less than one coffee per month to follow what parents are saying about your class.
FAQ
Will parents know Flewnt is in the group? Yes. When you add Flewnt to a group, LINE shows a "joined the group" system message. Flewnt is transparent about being a translation bot. If parents ask, the honest answer is: "I added a translation tool because my Thai is still improving."
What if I only want to translate specific messages, not all of them?
Flewnt translates every message that is in a different language from your configured target. There is no per-message opt-in. If you want to reduce noise, you can send /off to pause Flewnt in a specific group and /on to resume.
Does Flewnt translate voice notes? No. LINE voice notes are audio files. Flewnt processes text messages only. Voice notes appear as attachments and are not translated.
Can I run Flewnt in my class LINE group as well? Yes. Your subscription is per-user. One payment, every group you are in.
